There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

Windows vs. Linux networking

I just installed Fedora Core 6 last night. The install went without incident. For the last week or so, I’ve been running speed tests on my business Cable internet connection. I am paying for 6mbps down/2mbps up. I’ve been getting about 6 mbps down, but only 1 mbps up in most cases, sometimes even less.

When running the speed teests with Linux, I’m getting the 6/2 that I’m paying for. I forgot that Linux’s networking is superior to Microsoft. The thing that is really wierd is that several other machines here do strange things. I have a Windows XP machine here that will get about 2mpbs up, but never seems to get more than 4 mpbs down. Another machine that runs Vista does 6/1 regularly.

What’s interesting is that at first, I attributed the slow upload speeds to congestion on Cox’s network. Now, I’m thinking that it is the choice of OS that has influenced my speeds more than anything else.

I may start using Linux more…..
