There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

Using a converged device at church

I’ll admit it — I’ve become a fan of converged devices — more specifically, PDAs that have cellular phones built into them. I’ve owned several Blackberry units since 2003, and have now moved on to devices produced by HTC. I recently forgot to bring my Bible to church, and then remembered that I could use the NET Bible and ESV, by surfing to their websites. I know people at our church who have Bible software for their Treo, so I thought I should try it.

It’s not too bad. I like being able to access a different translation, especially one with translators notes, during a sermon. I helps to bring some perspective if there are different ways in which a word is being translated, or could be used.

  • Wouldn’t it be better if the church provided bibles in the pews for users to use? I’d have thought this would be more beneficial than having the distractions that a blackberry or cell phone would provide in addition to the online bible

Yes, I think it would be better to have Bibles in the pews. In fact, my church has them. At the time I first used my phone, it was because we were in the back row, and for some reason there were no Bibles anywhere near us. I can’t speak for other people, but I silence my phone when I go to church, and if a call comes in, I let it go to voicemail. I try to use it responsibly and without causing a distraction. Thanks for the comment!

  • Keep up the good work.
