There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

Reading books to cure insomnia

I was not able to sleep well the other night. The doctor told me that when this happens (which is not often), the best thing is not to jump on a computer, but to read a book. I decided to get out “Lectures on Calvinism”, by Abraham Kuyper. This was an excellent choice, and I am really happy to have bought the book. I’m learning about things such as Neo-Calvinism and concepts such as sphere sovereignty. It seems as though there is much to learn about applying Christian principles to all of life, not just one area. It is even suggested that Calvinism really can apply to a whole life-system, and not just the Doctrines of Grace.

One thing I would like to say, is that very often, those of us who claim the label of Calvinist would do well to be careful in our demeanor in conversations. I’ve seen many Calvinists act very arrogantly (and Arminians too!) in disagreements over this. One thing we should remember is that the Doctrines of Grace are humbling. They remove all manner of boasting. Only one thing, as I understand it, can we boast about: “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” Galatians 6:14 (ESV)

Let’s keep the Cross as the central thing in our lives.
