There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

FCC ruling in Amateur Radio

Well, it finally happened…. the FCC has decided that code will no longer be a requirement for any of the license classes. I think that it probably is for the better. Morse Code has its place, and most of my HF operating has been with Morse, but there are better systems for “emergency communication”. For instance, I’ve been playing with Winlink 2000 for the last six months, and I find that in an emergency situation, I’d be more prone to use that than trying to tap out a message. Those of us in the younger generation are interested in newer digital modes. Pactor with the SCS TNC has been really incredible, and I have been able to send messages in very high noise conditions.

So welcome to those new amateur radio operators! I’m on VHF/UHF repeaters during commute times, and once in awhile I’ve been known to check into the ECARS net on 7.255. I just have to figure out why my 40meter hamstick is cutting in and out… must be a loose connection in the antenna.
