There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

Thoughts on worship

Something I was thinking about coming home in the car yesterday, was how many things we do could be considered worship. Most of the time, the word “worship” is associated with the song service, usually contemporary, as in, “we use worship music at our church”. It is possible to worship with the old music as well as new music, but the word worship really encompasses many things we do. We are to present ourselves as “living sacrifices”, which is our “reasonable service”, but can also be translated “act of worship”.

Here are some more ways in which we can worship:

1. Preaching is an act of worship
2. Monetary offerings are an act of worship
3. Private devotional times are an act of worship (just yesterday I read that the Puritans called their devotional times “private worship”.)
4. Our work can be an act of worship. This is a particular area of study that interests me.

Worship is not a Sunday only event, nor is it a passive activity.

  • Very true. Of course the Reformers would agree with you. Luther said that everything is sacred, and this, of course, would apply to work. However, sometimes I find this the hardest thing to view as worship, because it can be so hard.
