There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

-- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Thinking out loud

I was thinking about Pascal’s Wager this morning, and thought about a disadvantage to it. I guess someone already had the same thought.

What I was thinking of was along the lines of “If God does exist then I haven’t lost anything”. I think this was presented once in an evangelistic sermon I heard as a good reason to believe in Christ.

The only problem that I find with that kind of thinking is that it falsely leads a person into thinking that there is no cost to Christianity. In other words, just pray a prayer and then you are all set.

There is a cost to following Christ. In fact, this reminds me of my readings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who wrote “The Cost of Discipleship”. When presenting Christ, we need to be cognizant of indicating that trusting in Christ isn’t a single moment in time; it is a lifetime of being led by God, and a daily walk with Him.
