There remains for us only the very narrow way, often extremely difficult to find, of living every day as though it were our last, and yet living in faith and responsibility as though there were to be a great future...

God’s sovereignty and business planning

I had jury duty today, and I brought along a truckload of books and magazines to speed read. They included:

IEEE Spectrum
Communications of the ACM
Target Marketing
InformationWeek
FastCompany

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership Workbook
Life@Work
No Rusty Swords

I didn’t get too far through “No Rusty Swords”, but it was interesting. I’ll blog about that in the next post.

One thing I noticed in the Life@Work book, was the verse:

Proverbs 16:9 The heart of man plans his way,
but the LORD establishes his steps. (ESV)

I think that this is helpful to me in my business planning. As I’m trying to use Project 2003 to get my schedule under control, I’m reminded that it is good to plan, and not just “let things happen”, but at the same time, God is in control, and He will lead and direct every step of the way.

I think this helps in the “truth in tension” of God’s Sovereignty and human responsibility. It would be negligent to not plan, but at the same time, ignorant to think that planning is the ultimate solution, since God is in absolute control.
